I decided to get 2 tomato plants this year – kind of a science experiment. 🙂 I put them in the ground and the plants were barely growing. I thought that maybe our soil here was just without any nutrients as nothing is ever done with the yard except cutting the grass. I added some liquid fertilizer which helped for a while.I found Back To The Roots Organic Potting Mix here on Amazon and decided to try it. All I could do was very gently turn about 1″ of soil on top and then add the potting mix. In 3 days both plants had grown about a foot and blooms started to appear. I added more about 2 months later and the plants are over 4 ft. tall now. Sadly, I’ve only had 4 tomatoes produced from the blooms. But, you can bet that next year my “science experiment” will include deeply tilling/turning the soil with Back To The Roots Organic Potting Mix. I will also add whatever other nutrients are needed for tomato plants.

I needed a very specific quality of soil for my indoor plants! Because I bought some beautiful new pots! This soil is the best that I have found! And so convenient to have it delivered to my house so quickly! And I really appreciate that the seller sent a small package with 2 small packages of mint seeds! Itâs holding the water so much better than I expected! There is no smell after watering my plants from the soil! And my plants are doing so well! Usually they go into shock when transplanting them! I have used this several times and my plants always do great with it! Itâs A good value for the amount you get and goes pretty far! this time I mixed it with some coco coir and some pumice for extra drainage for the plants I was repotting! ***HERE’S MY UPDATE: About a month later and I saw some new growth on the seedlings! I’m pleasantly surprised. It still doesn’t have a smell and I didn’t notice any gnats or anything. I will also say my kids played in it like it was regular dirt. Definitely not for outdoor use. I forgot it was only meant for indoors and put my planter outside and they were dead the next day, but that was completely user error. If you want indoor plants, this stuff is for sure worth a shot. Pics are before transferring to this new potting mix and a few weeks later.My first impressions are not great and I will update if anything changes. Upon opening the bag, it doesn’t look like soil. At all. It looks like someone kept all their cat’s hair balls and tricked people into thinking it’s dirt. I didn’t like touching it either; it was dry and fuzzy, like felt. I am extremely skeptical about the effectiveness of this stuff but keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t kill my kids’ seedlings. I will say that it doesn’t have a scent which is nice and seems to hold quite a lot of water while also draining enough that the plants don’t drown.

When I opened the soil I was surprised it was moist compared to another brand I bought before. After repotting my cactus I didnât feel like it needed to be watered.Will update on how this helps my cactus grow but so far this is great soil for succulents/ cactuses

Weighted it and it comes to 9.4 lbs and obviously did not expand to 15 lbs. I used 3 5-gallons buckets and was able to fill up 2 buckets but the 3rd is only about almost 1/3 full. It absorb water very quickly and retains it longer than peat moss in my opinion but the gnats drove me nuts. Not sure I will be buying again especially its not really 10lbs I’m getting.

 This is some nice stuff. And itâs a lot! Iâve always bought the 1+ lb bricks and decided to step up to this 10lb block. I started with half of the block (it splits easiest along its width into two big squares kind of like a giant sandwich) and was shocked at the quantity of loose coir it expanded into! I wound up using a bit more than half of that amount in my mix for two 5 gallon grow bags (mixed with perlite and worm castings) and so far the results have been excellent. Iâm seeing great growth with incredible water holding capacity and drainage. I chose this block because it was the least expensive I could find that was OMRI listed, and I have no regrets with my choice. Coir is a great growing medium – just remember that it doesnât really offer any nutrient value to your plants (which is fine for seed starts or cuttings) so if youâre potting up, make sure to add some high quality organic amendments/fertilizer to the mix as well. Your little green friends will thank you!
