England host Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday in their second game of the Euro 2024 qualification campaign. The Football Association has invited over 1,000 Ukrainian refugees and their host families to attend the match as part of the Government’s Homes for Ukraine Scheme in response to Russia’s invasion. As England look to build on their 2-1 victory over Italy, here are some of the key talking points ahead of the game.
United with Ukraine
The FA has shown its solidarity with the Ukrainian people by inviting more than 1,000 refugees to attend the match. The Ukrainian community in the UK numbers around 117,000, with many of them living with host families after fleeing the ongoing conflict.
A chance for Chilwell?
With Luke Shaw suspended after picking up two yellow cards against Italy, Ben Chilwell will be looking to prove himself at left-back for England. The Chelsea defender missed the World Cup through injury, but is now in top form for his club, offering Manager Gareth Southgate valuable options.
One step to Germany
Victory over Ukraine could put England in a strong position for qualification. After winning in Italy, England face Malta and North Macedonia in June. While there is still some way to go, England will be hoping to secure their place in next summer’s tournament with a win on Sunday.
Time for Toney?
With Harry Kane looking to add to his record-breaking 54 international goals, Brentford’s Ivan Toney could make his first appearance for England. Despite ongoing legal issues, Toney has proved himself on the pitch, scoring 28 Premier League goals in a year-and-a-half.
