“Algeria’s Books a Place at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations”

Algeria secures 2022 AFCON spot with a 1-0 win over Niger

The Algerian football team secured its spot in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals with a 1-0 win over Niger, with Baghdad Bounedjah making the only goal of the match. The victory ensured a top-two finish in their qualifying group, allowing them to compete with 24 other teams in the Ivory Coast next January. Algeria now joins the list of countries that have qualified for the tournament, including Morocco, who also gained their spot last Friday.

Aside from Algeria, other teams that won on Monday include Nigeria, Congo, Guinea, Sudan, and the Central African Republic, which have never previously qualified for the AFCON finals.

The Nigerian football team redeemed itself with a 1-0 win in the return leg against Guinea Bissau, while Ghana came from behind to draw with Angola in the second game under new coach Chris Houghton. Meanwhile, Congo put themselves back in contention with a 1-0 away win over South Sudan.

In other matches, Osman Bukari scored for Guinea as they edgedEthiopia 3-2 to top Group D, while a spectacular bicycle kick from Muhamed Kome made Sudan beat Gabon 1-0 to move within a point in Group I.

Tuesday will bring a further 13 matches to complete the fourth out of six rounds of qualifying.
