Barcelona Eye Joao Cancelo on Loan to Strengthen Full-Back Position
Barcelona is on the hunt for a top-level fullback, and Joao Cancelo is their number one target. The 28-year-old, currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester City, has fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola, and the Bavarians seem uninterested in making his move permanent despite a £62 million buyout clause. Sport reports that Barca boss Xavi is keen on bringing Cancelo to the Nou Camp on loan, valuing his versatility and seeing him as their best option due to affordability.
Barcelona’s recent Clasico defeat may have inspired their search for a fullback, as natural centre back Ronald Araujo struggled after being deployed at right back. Meanwhile, City faces a dilemma as Bayern’s reluctance to hang onto Cancelo has given them reason to contemplate his future. The player’s heated training ground fallout with Guardiola triggered him to seek an exit; however, City allowed him to leave for a European rival without defensive cover, indicating his role within the squad.
Bayern’s new fullback will face his old team next Tuesday, with City facing the Bavarians in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. Given Guardiola’s noncommittal about Cancelo’s future, a return to Barcelona on loan may benefit all parties. City is keen to win their first UCL trophy, and Erling Haaland may be their perfect weapon after he scored five against RB Leipzig in their last European game.
