Casey Stoney, San Diego’s Manager, Talks About Working In The US Away From Her Family

Casey Stoney Takes on the NWSL with San Diego Wave and Overcomes Personal Obstacles

Casey Stoney, the former England captain, led Manchester United to fourth place in the WSL before joining the San Diego Wave in the National Women’s Soccer League in 2021. Despite the team’s impressive display that saw them break the league’s 21-year crowd record, Stoney’s move to California came at a personal cost. Her partner and three children were unable to join her due to visa issues. Stoney admits that not seeing her family is the biggest challenge she has faced, but she came to San Diego to make a difference in the league and continues to develop and grow the new franchise.

The team finished third in their inaugural season and a play-off semi-final, and expectations are high for this year. Stoney wants to match or better their previous success and improve their playing style and identity. A significant contributor to the team’s performance is Alex Morgan, the USA’s World Cup-winning striker, who was the league’s top scorer in the previous season. Stoney praises Morgan’s leadership and drive to constantly improve the team.

Building trust with the new players was not an easy feat, but Stoney has been working towards creating a safe space and promoting players’ growth by minimizing the fear of mistakes. San Diego is dedicated entirely to the women’s team, making it a breath of fresh air compared to Manchester United, where Stoney previously worked. While she misses her family and the Women’s Super League, she remains focused on building and promoting San Diego Wave as a global brand until her services are no longer required.
