The Ajax Amsterdam vs. Feyenoord match on Wednesday turned sour when a man threw an object from the stands, striking Ajax’s Davy Klaassen on the head leaving him badly injured. The game was halted for 28 minutes before being resumed, with Ajax eventually triumphing to secure a place in the Dutch Cup final. Following the incident, Dutch international Klaassen was substituted.
The match also witnessed a confrontation between rival players which resulted in Klaassen getting hit on the head, seemingly by a cigarette lighter. Both teams briefly walked off the field, followed by Feyenoord’s assistant coach John de Wolf who berated the Feyenoord supporters via the public address system. Later, Ajax won the game with a scoreline of 2-1 which sets up an eventual final against PSV Eindhoven on April 30, 2021.
The game was already delayed due to smoke from fireworks lit by Feyenoord supporters before the violent incident occurred, which happened weeks after Feyenoord beat Ajax away in Amsterdam, thereby moving close to winning the Dutch title.
The police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the incident, and the authorities are conducting an investigation. Ajax will look to put the incident behind them as they prepare for the Dutch Cup final against PSV Eindhoven.
