France Seals Narrow 1-0 Win Against Republic of Ireland: Pavard’s Goal and Maignan’s Heroic Defense Saves the Day
France won a hard-fought battle against the Republic of Ireland, thanks to Benjamin Pavard’s spectacular second-half goal and goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s heroic double save on the stroke of 90 minutes. Pavard, the Bayern Munich full-back, scored an unstoppable right-footed shot from 25 yards that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. Meanwhile, Maignan, the new France No. 1 goalkeeper, took a firm grip of his spot with two stunning late saves to keep the Irish at bay.
The victory ensured France’s lead in the Group B of the Euro 2024 qualifiers, although they struggled to impress against Stephen Kenny’s Ireland team after their emphatic 4-0 win against the Netherlands in their opener. For Ireland, it was a losing start to the campaign, but there were promises to build on, particularly the outstanding performance of goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and the emerging centre-forward, Evan Ferguson, who ran himself into the ground against a tough French defense.
