Huddersfield Town to be purchased by Sacramento Republic owner

Sacramento Republic Owner Kevin Nagle to Purchase English Championship Side Huddersfield Town

American businessman Kevin Nagle, who owns Sacramento Republic, a USL Championship side, has made a significant move to purchase English Championship side Huddersfield Town, as announced on Tuesday.

In a statement released through the Republic and Huddersfield, Nagle said, “I am beyond pleased to announce I have entered into an agreement with Dean Hoyle to purchase a full stake in Huddersfield Town.”

Although the approval process is currently underway, Nagle refrained from making any further comment, expressing respect for the process.

Nagle has been associated with Sacramento Republic for nearly ten years and was part of the club’s ownership group when it was granted Major League Soccer expansion rights, an agreement that dissolved when lead investor Ron Burkle backed out.

Addressing his commitment towards both Sacramento Republic and Huddersfield Town, Nagle said, “As I pursue this new endeavor and build new connections to elite levels of football, I remain committed to Sacramento Republic FC’s continued success and growth, our plan to build a stadium and community asset in downtown Sacramento, and bright future as a topflight club.”

Last month, MLS commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the possibility of Sacramento joining the top U.S. league and name-checked Sacramento alongside Las Vegas, San Diego, Detroit, Phoenix, and Tampa.

Huddersfield Town has been through several ups and downs in the English football pyramid, spending the majority of the past four decades in the second and third divisions. The club was in the Premier League from 2017-2019 but got relegated after finishing at the bottom of the table in 2018-19. Last season, Huddersfield Town secured third place during the regular season and was narrowly defeated by Nottingham Forest in the EFL Championship playoff final.

Nagle, the co-founder and former CEO of Envision Pharmaceutical Holdings Inc, which was sold to private investment firm TPG in 2013, is also a minority owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.
