Brentford’s Ivan Toney Achieves “Dream Come True” with England Cap
27-year-old Ivan Toney has finally achieved his dream of playing for England, making his debut appearance in a European qualifying victory over Ukraine. Toney, who is the second-highest English goalscorer in the Premier League, had been called up by Gareth Southgate last September but didn’t get to play. He faced another setback in February when he broke Football Association betting rules and potentially faced a ban from the game.
Toney, however, persevered and kept working hard, eventually catching the attention of the manager and earning himself a substitute appearance against Ukraine. “All I can keep doing is keep working hard and when my chance comes, take it with two hands,” Toney said after the game. “I did that today and thankfully I got my cap, it means a lot.”
Toney’s journey to England’s national team has been a long one, starting at League Two side Northampton Town before moving to Premier League Newcastle United, where he only made four appearances. He eventually landed at Brentford, where he broke the record for the most goals scored in a Championship season with 31.
“It’s been a massive journey, a long journey but to finally make it is a massive achievement. The hard work starts now and hopefully I can continue that,” Toney said.
