Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell Sent Off in Match Against Real Madrid, but Jamie O’Hara Believes Another Was Culpable
Chelsea’s struggles continue as they were already down one goal against Real Madrid through Karim Benzema’s first-half opener before being dealt a second setback as Ben Chilwell was sent off for fouling Rodrygo. However, Jamie O’Hara believes that Marc Cucurella was to blame for being out of position when defending the pass played to Rodrygo.
Chilwell, who raced through on goal, was caught off-guard by Rodrygo getting goal-side of him, leading to his foul that resulted in a red card, but O’Hara insists that Cucurella’s positioning caused the unfortunate outcome. Despite the incident, it was the right call by referee Francois Letexier, who had to make the difficult decision of showing the red card to Chilwell.
Former Chelsea star Andy Townsend commented on the incident, pointing out Cucurella’s mistake and how it resulted in Chelsea’s predicament. As a result, the Blues was left to play with ten men, and things went from bad to worse for them when Marco Asensio managed to double Real Madrid’s lead through a left-footed strike on 73 minutes.
Chelsea continues to struggle in front of goal, having not scored since March 18 when they drew 2-2 with Everton. With high-flying Brighton up next, followed by a daunting match against Real Madrid in the second leg, Chelsea has plenty of work to do. Furthermore, they have tough games against Manchester United, Brentford, and Arsenal on the horizon.
