Why Pep Guardiola Avoided Kyle Walker in Inverted Full Back Role in Manchester City Line-Up?
Pep Guardiola’s decision to exclude Kyle Walker from Manchester City’s last two Premier League games raises questions over his role in the side. The English defender has made his presence felt in City’s defence, with 23 appearances in all competitions this season. However, as per Guardiola, Walker does not have the characteristics to play as an inverted full back, where full backs move to central spaces and dominate possession.
City manager praised Walker’s pace but cited that he does not have the necessary educated movements for playing in an inverted role. In the 3-0 win over Liverpool and a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace, Guardiola chose John Stones for the role instead of Walker.
“He cannot do it,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday. “He will always have pace; Kyle at 60 years old will be the fastest player in this room. To play inside, you have to have educated movements, and he doesn’t have every one of the characteristics.”
City is in action against Southampton as they look to close the gap on Arsenal at the top to five points.
