Marcelo Bielsa in talks to become new head coach of Uruguay national team
Former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is in discussions to take over as head coach of the Uruguay national team. The Argentinian was let go after his team’s 4-0 loss against Tottenham in February 2022, but is now closer to returning to the international stage.
TyC Sports reports that Bielsa is ‘very close’ to taking the role, which has been open since the firing of Diego Carlos.
Uruguay’s performance in the recent World Cup was disappointing, with the team being eliminated during the group stage. Bielsa, who has previously managed Argentina and Chile, is expected to lead his new team in the 2026 South American World Cup qualifiers, with a possible extension.
Everton had been interested in hiring Bielsa as their new head coach following Frank Lampard’s departure. However, the Argentinian turned down the offer, and the team eventually hired Sean Dyche. Bielsa was let go by Leeds as the team looked set for relegation. His successor, Jesse Marsch, was sacked 12 months later, and former Watford boss Javi Gracia took over.
