Former Inter Milan Star Marco Materazzi Reveals Parting Words to Jose Mourinho After Club Exit
In a recent interview with Italia Football TV, Marco Materazzi, former Inter Milan and Italy centre back, disclosed the final words he uttered to Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese boss left the club to join Real Madrid in 2010. Materazzi had sweared at Mourinho after the Nerazzurri’s historic treble, winning their first European trophy since the 1960s, Serie A title and Coppa Italia under the guidance of the ‘special’ manager.
Mourinho knew the names of all players’ children and wives, something that nobody else had ever done for Materazzi. In a bid to exit silently after the Champions League win over Bayern Munich, Mourinho tried slipping away on his own, but Materazzi did not let him leave without a proper goodbye. Materazzi admitted to saying “f*** you” to the Portuguese boss when he learned that Rafa Benitez would be taking over as manager to replace him.
Inter Milan struggled under Benitez during the following season, leading to his sacking in December when the club slipped to sixth in the league. Leonardo eventually replaced Benitez as the team manager and delivered them another Coppa Italia trophy. Mourinho’s exit left a noticeable impact on the club, but Inter Milan continues to be an Italian football giant today.
The interview with Materazzi brings back fond memories of Serie A’s golden era and how Mourinho’s tenure had an everlasting effect on players and supporters alike.
