Italy beat Malta 2-0 as Retegui and Pessina secure victory in Euro 2024 qualifier
Italy’s forward, Mateo Retegui, scored his second goal in two games since his Italy debut, while midfielder Matteo Pessina added a second to secure Italy’s 2-0 win over Malta in their Euro 2024 qualification Group C clash on Sunday.
After losing 2-1 against England on Thursday, defending champions Italy aimed to get back on track by defeating Malta. Although Malta is the underdogs in Group C, it imbrued elements of surprise, as IT took Italy 15 minutes to get their first goal when Retegui headed in a corner.

Roberto Mancini’s team managed to score another goal before half-time when Pessina tapped Emerson’s cross in from a short distance, securing a two-goal lead for Italy before the break. Although Malta put up a strong fight, frustrating Italy for long periods of the match, the Italians secured the win and moved up to second place in Group C, ahead of North Macedonia on goals scored.
Italy’s win over Malta follows their opening loss against England, who coincidentally beat Ukraine with a score of 2-0, putting them on the path to control Group C.
