Matildas struggle, yet enhance their depth in preparation for the World Cup

Scotland edges past Australia by 1-0 in competitive friendly at Cherry Red Records Stadium in London. Nicola Docherty’s stunning strike gave Scotland the lead which they held on until full-time. Australia coach Tony Gustavsson experimented with his line-up and provided opportunities for six players under 25 years of age, including Mary Fowler, who was impressive in the early exchanges. The emergence of younger players has been a hallmark for Gustavsson since taking charge of the Matildas in 2020. The A-League Women played a key role in the emergence of the next generation which provided Gustavsson vital options in terms of rotation and depth. Although, the focus of the team remains on staying true to the team identity and searching for that elusive 90-minute performance while being mindful of not pushing players too far with the increased loading they’ve had in the past few months.
