Former Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, also known as Blade Runner, is facing a parole hearing that could see him released from prison. Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and five months in 2016 after being found guilty of shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at their home in South Africa. He has applied for parole and could be freed within weeks, pending the outcome of the hearing. However, Steenkamp’s family have voiced their opposition to his release and will give evidence detailing the impact that the murder has had on them. The independent parole board will make its decision based on Pistorius’ risk of reoffending, disciplinary record, training programmes attended while in prison, and his physical and mental state. Concerns have been raised about his intentions following his release. A decision is expected soon.
