Antonio Conte has been sacked by Tottenham Hotspur.
Conte has been relieved of his duties with 10 games remaining this season after an extraordinary outburst in the aftermath of the 3-3 draw against Southampton last weekend. Speaking to the press, the Italian launched a scathing attack on his own players and questioned the club’s mentality.
Spurs have thanked Conte for his contribution but confirmed that he is no longer part of the club. Tottenham will be led by Cristian Stellini until the end of the season, assisted by former Spurs midfielder and current coach Ryan Mason.
Conte’s departure comes after a series of incidents in which the manager criticised Spurs in public. The team’s dismal Champions League exit to AC Milan and defeat to Sheffield United in the FA Cup this season have only added to the mounting pressure on Conte.
Despite leading Spurs to fourth place last season, Conte’s defensive style of play and public criticism of the club has frustrated supporters. The draw against the Premier League’s bottom club left Spurs two points clear of fifth-place Newcastle, but with Eddie Howe’s side having two games in hand.
Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, made no mention of Conte in a brief statement but urged everyone to “pull together” for the remaining 10 Premier League games.
